Reliable Sealing Protection for Powertrain and Drivetrain Systems
Automotive and motorcycle engines, transmissions, fuel, cooling, and hydraulic systems are continuously exposed to temperature fluctuations, oils, fuels, pressure, vibration, and high-speed operation.
Seals must not only prevent fluid or gas leakage but also block dust, moisture, and other contaminants from entering, helping maintain system efficiency, vehicle safety, and component service life.
NJK Pro offers O-rings, oil seals, V-rings, Bonded Seals (metal-and-rubber composite sealing washers), rubber gaskets, and custom rubber or rubber-to-metal bonded components.
We evaluate suitable sealing materials and designs based on the operating media, temperature, pressure, type of motion, and available installation space.
Key Requirements: Oil resistance, fuel resistance, heat resistance, wear resistance, pressure resistance, vibration resistance, and low compression set.
Key Application Systems
1. Engine and Lubrication Systems
Engine seals retain engine oil, coolant, and other operating fluids, preventing leakage from mating surfaces, line connections, pumps, and areas surrounding rotating shafts.
To withstand high engine-compartment temperatures, vibration, and repeated thermal cycling, sealing materials must provide reliable heat, oil, and aging resistance to maintain long-term sealing performance.
2. Transmission and Drivetrain Systems
Transmissions, differentials, and other drivetrain components require seals to retain gear oil and lubricants while preventing dust, moisture, and metallic particles from entering the system.
Seals around rotating shafts and bearings must also withstand friction, shaft runout, pressure, and continuous operation. Wear resistance, dimensional stability, and sealing-lip design are therefore especially important.
3. Fuel Supply Systems
Fuel pumps, injection systems, fuel tanks, lines, and quick connectors all require reliable seals to prevent gasoline, diesel, and other fuels from leaking.
Because different fuels, alcohol concentrations, and additives can affect rubber compounds differently, compatible NBR, HNBR, FKM, or other specialty materials must be selected according to the actual fuel type.
4. Cooling and Thermal Management Systems
Water pumps, thermostats, radiators, line connections, and valves require seals to retain coolant and maintain circulation pressure.
In addition to conventional engine cooling systems, the motors, batteries, and electronic control components in hybrid and electric vehicles also require stable thermal-management circuits. Sealing materials must withstand coolant exposure, thermal cycling, and long-term compression.
5. Brake and Hydraulic Systems
Brake, clutch, and other hydraulic control systems rely on seals to maintain operating pressure while preventing brake fluid or hydraulic fluid leakage and the ingress of external contaminants.
Materials exposed to brake fluid must be verified for compatibility with the specific fluid type and undergo the necessary dimensional, pressure, durability, and automotive-standard validation.
Common Rubber Materials
※Actual operating temperatures and material service life are affected by compound formulation, hardness, operating media, pressure, installation geometry, and static or dynamic conditions. Refer to the technical data and test results of the specified compound for verification.
| Material | Key Properties | Common Automotive and Motorcycle Applications |
|---|---|---|
| NBR Nitrile Rubber | Resistant to mineral oils, fuels, and hydraulic fluids, with good wear resistance | Engine lubrication, transmissions, fuel lines, and general oil seals |
| EPDM Ethylene Propylene Diene Rubber | Resistant to coolant, water, steam, ozone, and outdoor aging; unsuitable for petroleum-based oils | Cooling systems, specific brake-fluid systems, outdoor applications, and waterproof seals |
| CR Chloroprene Rubber | Good weather, ozone, moderate oil, and flame resistance | Dust boots, gaskets, hoses, and vibration-damping components |
| VMQ Silicone Rubber | Maintains flexibility across a wide temperature range and provides good weather resistance | High- and low-temperature areas, electrical insulation, thermal management, and engine-compartment seals |
| FKM Fluoroelastomer | Resistant to high temperatures, fuels, oils, and a wide range of chemical media | Engines, transmissions, fuel supply systems, and high-temperature sealing locations |
| HNBR Hydrogenated Nitrile Rubber | Provides better heat, ozone, wear, and aging resistance than standard NBR | Heavy-duty drivetrains, engines, fuel systems, and air-conditioning systems |
The Right Material Depends on the Actual Operating Conditions
Automotive and motorcycle seals should not be selected based on product dimensions alone. The following factors must also be evaluated:
-
Operating media and the composition of its additives
-
Maximum and minimum continuous and short-term temperatures
-
System pressure and pressure cycling
-
Static or dynamic sealing conditions
-
Shaft speed, friction, and wear conditions
-
Groove dimensions and available installation space
-
Expected service life and applicable test standards
-
PPAP, material certificates, dimensional reports, and other documentation requirements
