Maintaining Reliable Equipment Operation in Harsh Outdoor Environments
Tractors, harvesters, agricultural handling equipment, and spraying systems frequently operate for extended periods in dust, soil, moisture, sunlight, and extreme temperature fluctuations.
These machines may also be exposed to fuels, hydraulic oils, coolants, fertilizers, and agricultural chemicals.
Seals must prevent fluid leakage and pressure loss while blocking soil, moisture, and other contaminants from entering the equipment, reducing the risk of component wear, corrosion, and unplanned downtime.
NJK Pro offers O-rings, oil seals, V-rings, Bonded Seals (metal-and-rubber composite sealing washers), rubber gaskets, and custom rubber or rubber-to-metal bonded components.
We evaluate suitable sealing materials and designs based on the operating media, temperature, pressure, type of motion, and outdoor conditions.
Key Requirements: Oil resistance, fuel resistance, weather resistance, wear resistance, pressure resistance, dust protection, resistance to agricultural chemicals, and a wide operating temperature range.
Key Application Systems
1. Hydraulic Control Systems
Tractors, harvesters, loading equipment, and various agricultural implements commonly use hydraulic cylinders, pumps, valves, and quick couplings to control lifting, steering, and power transmission.
Seals must retain hydraulic oil and maintain system pressure under repeated pressurization, reciprocating motion, vibration, and heavy loads. Dust, mud, and moisture in agricultural environments may also accelerate wear, making dust exclusion, contaminant removal, and wear resistance important considerations.
2. Engines and Transmissions
Engines, transmissions, differentials, and drivetrain components in agricultural machinery require seals to retain engine oil, gear oil, fuel, and coolant while preventing external contaminants from entering.
Because this equipment often operates continuously for extended periods under high temperatures, vibration, and fluctuating loads, sealing materials must provide reliable resistance to oils, heat, wear, and aging to reduce the risk of leakage and component damage.
3. Fuel Tanks, Water Tanks, and Fluid Storage Systems
Fuel tanks, water tanks, coolant reservoirs, and other fluid containers in agricultural machinery require O-rings, gaskets, and fitting seals to prevent their contents from leaking.
Material selection must be verified according to the actual stored fluid. Rubber compounds suitable for water or coolant may not resist fuel, while materials suitable for fuel may not be compatible with fertilizers or other agricultural chemicals.
4. Braking, Steering, and Hydraulic Safety Systems
Brake, hydraulic steering, and clutch-control systems rely on seals to maintain operating pressure and ensure reliable braking, steering, and equipment operation.
Sealing materials exposed to brake fluid or hydraulic oil must be verified for compatibility with the specific fluid type. Pressure cycling, temperature fluctuations, extended periods of inactivity, and outdoor contamination must also be considered.
5. Spraying and Irrigation Equipment
Pumps, valves, hoses, fittings, and nozzles used in pesticide, liquid-fertilizer, and irrigation systems require reliable seals to control flow and reduce leakage risks.
The chemical compositions and concentrations of pesticides, fertilizers, and cleaning agents may vary significantly. Material selection must consider the media formulation, dilution ratio, operating temperature, and contact duration to prevent swelling, softening, hardening, or cracking.
Common Rubber Materials
※Actual operating temperatures and material service life are affected by compound formulation, hardness, operating media, chemical concentration, pressure, installation geometry, and outdoor conditions. Refer to the technical data and test results of the specified compound for verification.
| Material | Key Properties | Common Agricultural Machinery Applications |
|---|---|---|
| EPDM Ethylene Propylene Diene Rubber | Resistant to water, ozone, ultraviolet exposure, and outdoor aging; unsuitable for petroleum-based oils | Irrigation systems, water tanks, cooling systems, and outdoor waterproof seals |
| NBR Nitrile Rubber | Resistant to mineral oils, fuels, and hydraulic fluids, with good wear resistance | Hydraulic systems, engines, transmissions, fuel lines, and general oil seals |
| CR Chloroprene Rubber | Good weather and ozone resistance, moderate oil resistance, and vibration-damping performance | Outdoor equipment, hoses, gaskets, dust boots, and vibration-damping components |
| VMQ Silicone Rubber | Maintains flexibility across a wide temperature range and provides good weather resistance | High- and low-temperature locations, electrical equipment, cooling systems, and outdoor seals |
| FKM Fluoroelastomer | Resistant to high temperatures, fuels, oils, and a wide range of chemical media | Engines, fuel systems, high-temperature locations, and equipment handling specific agricultural chemicals |
| HNBR Hydrogenated Nitrile Rubber | Provides better heat, wear, ozone, and aging resistance than standard NBR | Heavy-duty hydraulic systems, drivetrain systems, and continuous-duty equipment |
The Right Material Depends on the Actual Operating Conditions
Agricultural machinery seals should not be selected based on product dimensions or hardness alone. The following factors must also be evaluated:
-
Contact with fuels, hydraulic oils, coolants, or other operating fluids
-
Composition and concentration of pesticides, fertilizers, and cleaning agents
-
Maximum and minimum continuous and short-term temperatures
-
System pressure and pressure cycling
-
Static, rotary, or reciprocating motion
-
Shaft speed, friction, and wear conditions
-
Dust, mud, moisture, and high-pressure washing conditions
-
Sunlight, ozone, and long-term outdoor exposure
-
Groove dimensions, surface finish, and available installation space
-
Expected service life, maintenance intervals, and inspection-document requirements
