Industrial applications
From Fluid Control to Equipment Protection, Keeping Production Running Reliably
Seals used in industrial equipment must maintain reliable gas-tight or liquid-tight performance under pressure, temperature fluctuations, oils, chemical media, friction, and continuous operation.
Seal failure may cause leakage, pressure loss, contaminant ingress, equipment wear, and unplanned downtime.
NJK Pro offers O-rings, oil seals, V-rings, Bonded Seals (metal-and-rubber composite sealing washers), rubber gaskets, and custom rubber or rubber-to-metal bonded components.
We evaluate suitable sealing materials and designs based on the operating media, temperature, pressure, type of motion, and available installation space.
Key Requirements: Oil resistance, pressure resistance, wear resistance, chemical resistance, weather resistance, dimensional stability, and long-term sealing performance.
Key Application Systems
1. Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems
Hydraulic cylinders, pneumatic cylinders, pumps, valves, control manifolds, and piping connections all rely on seals to maintain system pressure and prevent fluid or gas leakage.
Under repeated pressurization, reciprocating motion, and long-term compression, seals must provide excellent pressure resistance, wear resistance, and low compression set. High-pressure environments also require consideration of clearance extrusion, pressure pulsation, and installation damage.
2. Industrial Machinery and Heavy Equipment
Gearboxes, speed reducers, bearings, rotating shafts, air compressors, and heavy equipment require seals to retain lubricating and hydraulic oils while preventing dust, moisture, and metallic particles from entering.
Manufacturing equipment and hydraulic or pneumatic tools are continuously exposed to vibration, impact, friction, and prolonged operation. Sealing materials and designs must provide wear resistance, aging resistance, and dimensional stability to reduce leakage, abnormal wear, and maintenance-related downtime.
3. Electronic and Electrical Equipment
Control cabinets, junction boxes, sensors, connectors, and cable entries require rubber seals to prevent dust, moisture, oil mist, and other environmental contaminants from entering.
In addition to sealing performance, materials may also need to provide electrical insulation and resistance to weather, ozone, and temperature. Where specific ingress-protection ratings are required, performance must be verified through complete enclosure design and assembly testing.
4. Food and Beverage Processing
Pumps, valves, piping, and connections used in food processing, beverage transfer, filling, and packaging equipment require reliable seals to control fluids, prevent leakage, and reduce external contamination risks.
Sealing materials must be compatible with the food or beverage being processed and may also need to withstand hot water, steam, and cleaning chemicals. Specified compounds with the appropriate food-contact certification should be selected according to the contact media, cleaning procedures, and applicable regulations.
5. Marine and Water Treatment Systems
Pumps, valves, and piping used in marine equipment, water-supply systems, wastewater treatment, filtration equipment, and desalination systems require seals to maintain fluid-transfer efficiency and prevent leakage.
These systems may be continuously exposed to fresh water, seawater, chlorine, ozone, treatment chemicals, and outdoor conditions. Materials with appropriate water, weather, and chemical resistance must therefore be selected according to the media concentration, pressure, temperature, and exposure duration.
Common Rubber Materials
※Actual operating temperatures and material service life are affected by compound formulation, hardness, media concentration, pressure, installation geometry, and static or dynamic conditions. Refer to the technical data and test results of the specified compound for verification.
| Material | Key Properties | Common Industrial Applications |
|---|---|---|
| NBR Nitrile Rubber | Resistant to mineral oils, fuels, and hydraulic fluids, with good wear resistance | Hydraulic systems, pumps, gearboxes, air compressors, and general oil-resistant seals |
| CR Chloroprene Rubber | Good weather and ozone resistance, moderate oil resistance, and vibration-damping performance | Outdoor equipment, electrical enclosures, dust boots, gaskets, and vibration-damping components |
| EPDM Ethylene Propylene Diene Rubber | Resistant to water, steam, ozone, and outdoor aging; unsuitable for petroleum-based oils | Water treatment, cooling systems, outdoor equipment, and specific food-processing equipment |
| VMQ Silicone Rubber | Maintains flexibility across a wide temperature range and provides good electrical insulation | High- and low-temperature equipment, electronic and electrical systems, food processing, and special-environment seals |
| FKM Fluoroelastomer | Resistant to high temperatures, oils, fuels, and a wide range of chemical media | Chemical processing, high-temperature pumps and valves, compressors, and harsh industrial environments |
| HNBR Hydrogenated Nitrile Rubber | Provides better heat, wear, ozone, and aging resistance than standard NBR | Heavy-duty hydraulic systems, air compressors, heavy machinery, and continuous-duty equipment |
The Right Material Depends on the Actual Operating Conditions
Industrial seals should not be selected based on dimensions or hardness alone. The following factors must also be evaluated:
-
Composition and concentration of the liquids, gases, and chemical media in contact with the seal
-
Maximum and minimum continuous and short-term temperatures
-
System pressure, vacuum level, and pressure cycling
-
Static, rotary, or reciprocating motion
-
Shaft speed, stroke, friction, and wear conditions
-
Dust, particles, moisture, and outdoor exposure
-
Steam, cleaning agents, and sanitation procedures
-
Groove dimensions, surface finish, and available installation space
-
Food-contact, potable-water, or other regulatory requirements
-
Material certificates, dimensional reports, and product traceability requirements
