Oil & Gas Sealing Solutions
Maintaining Safe, Reliable Sealing Under High Pressure, Temperature, and Complex Media
Oil and gas equipment operates across multiple stages, including extraction, transportation, storage, and processing.
Seals may be continuously exposed to crude oil, natural gas, fuels, lubricants, process chemicals, and water-containing media while withstanding high pressure, temperature fluctuations, and corrosive gases.
Seal failure may cause fluid or gas leakage, system pressure loss, and equipment shutdown. In addition to media compatibility, material selection must consider gas permeation, clearance extrusion, rapid gas decompression, and long-term compression.
NJK Pro offers O-rings, oil seals, V-rings, Bonded Seals (metal-and-rubber composite sealing washers), rubber gaskets, and custom rubber or rubber-to-metal bonded components.
We evaluate candidate sealing materials and designs based on media composition, temperature, pressure, type of motion, and equipment specifications. Final suitability must be tested and validated under actual operating conditions.
Key Requirements: Hydrocarbon resistance, high-pressure resistance, high-temperature resistance, chemical resistance, extrusion resistance, rapid gas decompression resistance, and long-term sealing performance.
Key Application Systems
1. Wellhead and Pressure Control Equipment
Wellhead equipment forms the interface between subsurface oil and gas reserves and surface piping systems. Seals are required to control crude oil, natural gas, drilling mud, and other operating fluids.
Sealing materials may be simultaneously exposed to high pressure, temperature fluctuations, H₂S, CO₂, moisture, and various chemical additives. Material selection must consider the complete media composition, gas concentrations, pressure cycling, and decompression rate rather than relying solely on general oil resistance.
2. Blowout Preventers and Safety Control Systems
Blowout preventers and other pressure-control equipment are used to manage well pressure and restrict the release of oil, gas, or drilling fluids during abnormal conditions.
Elastomer components in this safety-critical equipment may be subjected to extremely high pressure, rapid pressure fluctuations, mechanical deformation, and complex media. Materials and components must comply with the specified equipment design, operating conditions, and validation standards. Suitability cannot be determined solely from generic material designations such as NBR, HNBR, or FKM.
3. Valves and Flow Control Equipment
Ball valves, gate valves, control valves, and other flow-control equipment require seals to control the flow of liquids or gases and maintain pressure when closed.
Seals may operate under static, rotary, or reciprocating conditions while being exposed to pressure cycling, friction, and media attack. Material selection must balance chemical resistance, low compression set, friction characteristics, and extrusion resistance.
4. Pumps and Compressors
Pumps and compressors transport and pressurize oil, natural gas, and process fluids. Rotating shafts, housings, valves, and piping interfaces all require reliable seals to prevent media leakage and maintain system efficiency.
In addition to the operating media and temperature, shaft speed, vibration, eccentricity, lubrication conditions, and pressure pulsation must also be evaluated. Gas-compression equipment requires further consideration of gas permeation and internal damage caused by rapid gas decompression.
5. Pipe Fittings, Flanges, and Threaded Connections
Flanges, pipe fittings, instrument connections, and hydraulic connections in oil and gas transportation systems require O-rings, gaskets, or Bonded Seals to create stable sealing interfaces.
Seal design must match the connection type, tightening force, surface condition, pressure rating, and temperature cycling. Insufficient compression, excessive tightening, or surface damage may cause leakage even when the sealing material is chemically compatible.
Common Rubber Materials
※Materials sharing the same generic designation do not necessarily provide identical performance. Resistance to H₂S, CO₂, high-pressure gases, and rapid gas decompression depends on compound formulation, hardness, manufacturing processes, and test conditions. Refer to the technical data and validation results of the specified compound for verification.
| Material | Key Properties | Common Oil and Gas Applications |
|---|---|---|
| NBR Nitrile Rubber | Resistant to mineral oils, fuels, and various petroleum-based fluids, with good wear resistance | General hydraulic systems, pumps, valves, and petroleum-fluid seals |
| FKM Fluoroelastomer | Resistant to high temperatures, fuels, oils, and a wide range of chemical media | High-temperature valves, pumps, compressors, and fuel-transfer equipment |
| EPDM Ethylene Propylene Diene Rubber | Resistant to water, steam, ozone, and outdoor aging; unsuitable for petroleum-based oils and fuels | Water lines, steam systems, cooling systems, and outdoor auxiliary equipment |
| CR Chloroprene Rubber | Good weather and ozone resistance, moderate oil resistance, and vibration-damping performance | Outdoor equipment, protective components, hoses, and non-critical sealing locations |
| HNBR Hydrogenated Nitrile Rubber | Provides better heat, oil, wear, and aging resistance than standard NBR | Heavy-duty hydraulic systems, valves, pumps, and specified high-pressure oil and gas equipment |
| FFKM Perfluoroelastomer | Broad chemical resistance and high-temperature stability for demanding process media | High-temperature applications, corrosive chemicals, and specialized oil and gas processing equipment |
| VMQ Silicone Rubber | Maintains flexibility across a wide temperature range but provides limited resistance to oils and fuels | Non-hydrocarbon media, instrumentation, outdoor applications, and auxiliary equipment exposed to extreme temperatures |
The Right Material Depends on the Actual Operating Conditions
Oil and gas seals should not be selected based on dimensions, hardness, or generic material designations alone. The following factors must also be evaluated:
-
Complete composition of crude oil, natural gas, fuels, and process fluids
-
Concentrations of H₂S, CO₂, moisture, and aromatic compounds
-
Methanol, glycols, amines, and other additives
-
Maximum and minimum continuous and short-term temperatures
-
Maximum working pressure and pressure cycling
-
Decompression rate and rapid gas decompression risks
-
Static, rotary, or reciprocating motion
-
Clearance dimensions, extrusion-resistance requirements, and the use of backup rings
-
Shaft speed, friction, vibration, and wear conditions
-
Equipment-specific standards, testing, and certification requirements
-
Material certificates, batch traceability, and change-management requirements
